It's true! Although running on the treadmill is a great way to burn some extra calories and get the heart strong, building muscle is a great way to lose fat!
Sound to good to be true? Let's look at the numbers...
The goal is to replace fat with muscle. Even though they weight the same, the look is completely different! How do we replace fat with muscle? Strength training... Here is how it works.
1 pound of fat = 3,500 calories
1 pound of muscle can burn 10 to 15 calories a day at rest
Not to get to crazy with science, one of the main reasons to build lean muscle is to increase our metabolism. What does all this mean? In order for muscle to maintain itself, it will burn calories to strong and healthy, increasing our metabolism. Let's crunch the numbers.
10 pounds of lean muscle mass burns 150 caloriesa day AT REST 1 hour of strength training a day burns 200 calories
(150 + 200) x 7 = 2450 calories a day!
This means that we only have to decrease our caloric intake by 150 calories a day. 2450 + 1050 = 3500
What does 3500 calories equal? One pound of fat!
The point being, is that as long as we stay active and don't fuel workouts with ice cream, we can lose weight in a healthy and natural way without crash diets and "magic pill" supplements. Stay active, eat right and stay focused cause a strong foundation, builds a Strong House.
